The Australian Football League (AFL) has signed up $45 million, five year online and mobile rights deal with the Australian telco giant Telstra. The telco’s BigPond unit will offer customers full match replays 12 hours after the final siren, instead of 24 hours after the game currently. Content will be offered on Telstra’s BigPond internet service and on Telstra’s new 3G broadband mobile network, which was also launched today (more details on that 3G launch on our sister site MocoNews).
The previous Internet rights deal between the AFL and Telstra was valued at about $18.6 million.
Also, in conjunction with its 3G launch, Telestra has announced a bunch of other content deals, including Warner Bros. classic movies and the BBC’s TV programs on their PCs through the BigPond Movie Download service, and 12 channels of FOXTEL on mobile handsets.
