Looks like Sify has competition: Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) had tied up with Sify last month, to sell railway tickets via Sify’s 3400 iWay cybercafes. Now they’re looking to increase the points of purchase – post offices, and State Bank of India ATM’s and branches. An MOU has been signed with SBI and the IRCTC is also talks with the Department of Posts. They’ve also received a proposal from UTI bank for online ticketing.
The biggest issue today for many businesses in India, particularly when it comes to rural India, is that of distribution. The department of posts, according to the report has 1.5 Lakh post offices, while SBI has the largest number of bank branches in India. Surely, they can add more services and make better use of their network. E-ticketing also threatens to make an entire industry of neighbourhood travel agents redundant.
