MySpace – Social Net For Silver Surfers?

OK, maybe not silver exactly but this ComScore report says that nearly half MySpace’s audience are over 35. That seems extremely high to me, and even if that is accurate I’m sure the number of page views per user would be higher with a younger audience. I’d also guess that MySpace has older users because it’s the best known social net – Mum can’t join Xanga if she’s never heard of it. But those are just my hunches…
Friendster also skews higher; between 68 and 71 percent of readers on both sites were over 25. Xanga averaged 20 percent between 12-17 and 34 percent of Facebook users are between 18 and 24. The significance here is that these sites may not compete as directly as it would appear. ComScore Media Matrix EVP Jack Flanagan: “As social networking sites have become mainstream, the demographic composition of MySpace.com has changed considerably. Last year half of the site’s visitors were at least 25 years old, while today more than two-thirds of MySpace visitors are age 25 or older. It will be interesting to monitor the shifts in Facebook’s demographic composition that will undoubtedly occur as a result of the company’s recent decision to open its doors to users of all ages.” Release
