JOB DESCRIPTION:
- Educate and lead our internal departments and external clients regarding areas of opportunity in the wireless and video game industry, the culture and community that surround the gaming and wireless mindset.
- Internal: Identify and author relevant, proprietary research studies that will enable our internal departments to intimately know the ‘gamer’ and wireless user and provide new opportunities to touch them with our brands. Support MTV sales, programming, business development and other relevant departments to ensure long-term success in this category
- External: Continue to prove to our external clients the value of this partnership with MTV by demonstrating our leadership and the current potential of the video game and wireless consumer.
- Partner with MTV Games to help identify and test gaming concepts
- Develop new ways of delivering entertainment and content through wireless
- Strategize with and support various divisions across MTV, domestic and global, with consumer insight to help them become a dominate player in the video game industry
- Help identify new ways to communicate to and access our consumers through programming, online and mobile content
- Serve as the video game specialist, point of contact and reference with various departments
- Identify and create compelling opportunities for consumer products
- Increase/Drive revenue and a competitive advantage that directly affects our Ad Sales and Affiliate Sales divisions
RESPONSIBILITIES
- Provide research and managerial support to identify and create compelling Gaming opportunities for our businesses and across MTV Screens to gain revenue and a competitive advantage through advertising sales, marketing and product development
- Develop customized research studies (both Qualitative and Quantitative methodologies) that help identify the gamers needs/wants and report these findings back to relevant departments
- Internally educate MTV’s relevant departments and employees around the sociological importance and economic value that video games provide
- Use weekly channel Sales meetings to maintain a relationship with video game clients and strategize ways that apply my deep understanding of the category to build deeper relationships
- Be available to the Ad Sales force to advise and facilitate in client meetings
- Serve as point of contact and partner with video game publishers and outside vendors in order to stay hyper-aware of what information exists and what is lacking
- Recognizing the Global potential this category represents to MTV, liaise between domestic and regional/international offices to brainstorm on industry opportunities and risks
- Attend and facilitate in relevant seminars, conferences and panel discussions to provide internal departments and external colleagues insight into implications and new ways of thinking about the business
- Meet with individual channel Management independently to help them stay current on issues that affect sales and other relevant departments. For instance, the ESRB and Mature content sensitivity
- Consistently report these issues to management and help guide solutions
- Provide appropriate follow-up to reveal opportunities to evolve and improve our processes and approaches
- Coordinate a Video Game Sales Task Force involving members of sales and research that together would help identify the needs of the Sales force and generate MTV Networks policies and point of views
- Forge positive relationships and connections with major gaming publisher and research organizations. Such as: Ludology.org, IDGA, MIT, ESA and the ESRB in order to help us stay intimately connected to the professional and research gaming community
- Strong overall knowledge of the wireless carrier/manufacturer relationship
- Experience in emerging wireless technologies, including but not limited to Bluetooth, JAVA, VOIP, imagining, gaming and MMS
- Trending experience in user penetration rates and technology adoptionProficient in Telephia analysis
- Firm grasp of CDMA, WCDMA and GSM technologies
- Please note: The below responsibilities should be viewed through a video game prism but also with a larger MTV Brand understanding
- Expertise: Demonstrate the ability to serve as an expert on the Video Game Industry and audience regarding the:
- Target audiences’ hopes, dreams, and motivators leading to media behaviors, beliefs, perceptions and opinions of our brands and as it relates to advertising/marketing message connection (should be able to broadly address reasons why any brand could benefit from MTV Marketing recommendations)
- o Networks competitive position, ratings trends, core demos, programming schedule and philosophy
- o Advertising clients: is familiar and conversant about key players, spending patterns, and marketing and sales objectives; seeks to identify new business opportunities based on consumer expertise of each network.
- o MTV brand connections: leverage MTV as primary destination to communicate advertising partner’s messages to audiences with highest potential to find relevance, resonance, connection.
- o MTV as a whole, and the Research Department’s contribution:
- Understands the various departments in the regions and in NY
- Is comfortable interacting with other (MTV Research and extended internal) departments on joint projects and to access information when directed
- Participates in and leads independent and collective problem-solving ventures with team members on his/her network, across-channels and across-offices
- Identifies, informs and offers solutions to management on macro-issues affecting the Video Game Industry
- Stays current on consumer behaviors and industry news and brings this learning to current video Game projects and presentations
- Attends relevant seminars and provides colleagues and team members with the implications and new ways of thinking about our business
- Understands, embraces, and fulfills all corporate goals as outlined annually by senior research management
- Meets with channel Management independently to stay current on and in front of Video Game issues affecting sales
- Consistently reports these issues to his management
- Provides appropriate follow-up to reveal opportunities to evolve and improve our processes and approaches
REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 5+ years media/market research experience
- Background in and/or strong understanding of the Video Game Industry
- Strong analytical and numerical skills
- Strong knowledge of television and media space
- Strong knowledge of current cultural and media trends with respect to target audience
- Must be able to work long/off hours and travel
- Proven ability to work under pressure, handle multiple projects and meet deadlines
- Proven ability to consistently deliver on commitments
- Demonstrated ability to seek out & act quickly on opportunities
- Demonstrated ability to be persistent & resourceful in order to deliver results
- Demonstrated ability to address issues or problems in a timely manner
- Demonstrated ability to challenge & work to improve the way things are done
- Demonstrated ability to look for opportunities to build skills, knowledge and attain them
- Strong communication skills — written and oral
- Detail-oriented
- Strong PC skills (Microsoft Word, Powerpoint and Excel)
- Strong business and personal ethics
DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:
- 4 year college degree
- Experience working with analytical database systems
- Agency/TV/Entertainment experience preferred
- Experience with youth culture a plus
