David Gosen, CEO of I-Play, has warned that “the mobile gaming industry must not fall into the same trap as the console industry and create content for a niche audience that grows slowly”. He reckons the console industry failed for 25 years to successfully expand its audience beyond the niche.
I don’t think mobile games are making the same mistake, since a majority of mobile gamers are women playing casual games — and they’re not in the youth age group either. That presents its own dangers, of course, such as avoiding non-casual games, but there are enough companies targeting the high-end market that it shouldn’t become an issue.
