Mobux is selling wallpapers by independent Australian artists, as well as some from around the world, for $2.50 a pop. “The managing director of Mobux, Scott Wenkart, said the art gallery was an alternative to standard mobile phone wallpaper. “What has sold previously in the mobile phone wallpaper market has been nude images,” Mr Wenkart said. “We are focusing on a niche segment of the market who want original work by independent artists.” I’m sure there have been other mobile wallpapers sold than just soft porn… The main thing to draw from this sort of offering, as well as other offerings like classical ringtones and other galleries for emerging artists is that personalization is no longer just for teenagers and early adopters…hasn’t been for some time, really.
