New MVNO To Focus On Chinese-Americans

Red Pocket MobileAnother MVNO has launched in the US, this one focused on Chinese-Americans. The big drawcard for Red Pocket Mobile is the ability to call China and Singapore for the same price as a local call, 15c per minute. Also, customers can get a number in Asia so they can be called, with the callers paying only the cost of the local call and the US recipient paying the 15c per minute. On the content side, the two handsets (Razr (for $150) and the C139 (for $50)) have menus in Chinese characters. I can’t find any other content mentioned, but there’s plenty that could be added, such as a clock showing Chinese time.
“Out of “several thousand” handsets that already had been provided to distributors in New York, Los Angeles and San Francisco, “half the product is gone.” The goal is to have 100,000 subscribers by 2008.
Rafat adds: If there could be a high-end MVNO targeting Korean-Americans, namely Helio, then why not one targeting an even bigger ethnic population? I have also heard about some of the big Indian operators looking to launch an Indian-American (desi in our language) here as well.
