.Mobi Gets 75,000 Registrations

The WSJ is reporting that “businesses and individuals in more than 100 countries registered over 75,000 wireless Web sites with a “dot-mobi” domain name yesterday”. The wholesale price for the domain is $25 per year, although the paper reports that “the registration fee will drop drastically afterward, but many “good” and unique domain names won’t be available”. I’m not sure if the company that manages the domain, mTLD, considers that a good figure or not, but I can’t imagine them saying it isn’t.
Meanwhile, ZDNet UK asks if there is a point to .mobi. The general answer appears to be “no”, for example: “It’s PR spin,” said Windsor Holden, a senior analyst with telecommunications consultancy Analysys, on Wednesday. “It’s not going to make it any easier to access the content รข
