Concern Over .Mobi

The Financial Times has a piece on .mobi, writing about the concerns of the business community about the proliferation of domain names which need to be protected to avoid trademark infringement, something that the industry press (including us and especially TechDirt) have been talking about for a while. “A senior lawyer at Verizon Communications, the second-largest US telecommunications group, said there was no “particular business need” for “dotmobi” and the company had only registered verizon.mobi to prevent others taking it.”
Even domain registrars are skeptical…”Marcus Eggensperger, legal director at Lycos Europe, said: “As a registrar, we are lucky because we have new markets but, to be honest, for trademark owners it could be a problem to have to make defensive registrations.”
Apparently 13,000 names were registered in the sunrise period, which isn’t a great number…
