Business Standard: Here is an interesting development. Subhash Chandra’s Zee group has applied to the department of telecommunications (DoT) for spectrum to launch digital public mobile radio trunking services in Bangalore. Mobile radio trunking is a walkie-talkie service through which users can talk to each other in a closed group. Since it’s digital the phone instruments are much sleeker (like a mobile phone) compared to its analogue avtar. It also allows broadband access, and private conversations within the user group.
Besides, calls can be made to and received from other networks as long as there is an interconnect agreement with telecom operators, just as in mobile phone services. The new sets also have a range of over 50 km, which means they can be used anywhere in a city. The cost of handsets would be less than Rs 10,000 and the service – bundled with broadband and SMS – would cost less than Rs 1,000. It- should be a good service for customer service personnel, courier guys etc.
