Communacopia XV: VZW Sees No Slowdown In Data Growth

So said its CEO Dennis Strigl said today at the Communacopia XV conference in NYC today. He said VZW expects to sustain $1 billion in quarterly revenue from wireless data services such as e-mail and music downloads.
Data-related revenue opportunities include advertising on wireless devices and “search and find” services that can link to a global positioning system, Strigl said. VZWs subscribers eventually will have to pay premium fees for high- capacity services such as streaming video, he added. Unlimited wireless service for a flat monthly fee “is not something that will last forever in the more complex applications,” he said.
Reuters: VZW’s biggest rival Cingular Wireless, also sees significant growth from data though growth from voice services remains key, COO Ralph de la Vega said at the same conference. “I think we’ll see a lot of growth coming from data…I don’t think I would say most of it. The consumer market is not fully penetrated.” Almost 12 percent of Cingular Q2 service revenue came from data compared with 13 percent at VZW and 6 percent at Alltel, the leading rural service. Alltel CEO Scott Ford said his company is just “starting to catch up with data” as it was slower to build high speed data networks than some of its rivals.
