Senior Director, Content and Product Policy

Location: Burbank, CA

Reports to: Senior Vice President Customer and Content Solutions

Job Description:
The Sr. Director’s main responsibility is to effectively balance the needs of key constituents (user, advertiser, publisher, business) in forming and enforcing policy to create a sustainable model to maximize long-term success of the YSM business. The responsibilities cover aspects of both advertiser and publisher policy across all distribution products and methods.

Primary Responsibilities:
Own Strategy, Execution, and Management of YSM Policy

  • Lead development and management of policy and guidelines for advertisers, publishers, and the marketplace for YSM.
    * Advertiser policy – Editorial guidelines for creative elements and content requirements, and protection of user and publisher experiences
    * Publisher policy – Guidelines for page content, ad placement and usage, and protection of advertiser and user experiences
    * Marketplace policy – Consistent application of marketplace rules
  • Execute policies and accountable for ensuring compliance.
  • Strategize and develop specific editorial guidelines and policies for new markets and products to improve the quality of search results and contextual advertisements, and drive revenue.
  • Lead development of new guidelines to support emerging advertising channels and tactics
  • Build consensus on policy decisions across the company and uphold guidelines.
  • Manage the day-to-day operations of the guidelines and policies team.

    Lead connection to key cross-functional teams

  • Liaise with cross-functional representatives to ensure buy-in and commitment to enforcement. The Sr. Director must also understand and respond to operational considerations, communications needs, and business impact.
    * Work closely with Content Solutions, Customer Solutions, Global Content Quality, Partner Team, Sales and Product line owners to understand customer and operations needs and quality implications.
    * Work with Legal to understand emerging trends and act accordingly to mitigate risks while balancing revenue upside and operational feasibility.
    * Collaborate with Global Product Management to inform technology on quality and policy issues to improve internal systems and workflow submission processes to effectively scale editorial operations.
    * Connect with Yahoo! policy group to ensure consistency in advertising with Yahoo!’s policies for privacy and trust.
  • Provide guidance and global coordination for editorial guidelines and policies in existing markets and facilitate best practice sharing across all Yahoo! properties.

    Communicate policy to internal and external parties

  • Ensure internal and external parties have a solid understanding of the intent and requirements of Yahoo! Search Marketing’s guidelines.
  • Regularly coordinate with corporate communications, marketing and legal teams on internal and external communications strategies with respect to YSM policies.
  • Accountable for messaging, documents, and sharing of policy information to educate internal parties on guidelines.
  • Develop communications and messaging to help customers understand and comply with policies.
  • Act as external face of YSM in communicating policy (e.g., for advertiser escalations, at conferences, to media, etc.)

    Serve as Point for Escalations and Decisions

  • Act as corporate level contact for internal business partners and act as ultimate decision maker on YSM policy issues
  • Provide corporate level adjudication of market-level editorial appeals and guideline interpretations, resolve escalations and improve customer satisfaction.
  • Lead investigation and recommendations on issues where quality and economics need to be analyzed and balanced.
  • Assist in data analysis of policy impact to operations.

    Required Skills and Qualifications:

  • The successful candidate will have 10+ years management experience.
  • This person should be an established leader with the experience, track record of success and passion for making decisions with complex data.
  • The ideal person will be comfortable making decisions by balancing risk and competing viewpoints and must be able to defend the decisions to various constituents.
  • Candidates should have demonstrated expertise in working with multiple disciplines and functional areas to resolve issues.
  • Outstanding team leadership, team development and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Strong data analytical skills; excellent judgment, logic and reasoning skills
  • Bachelor’s Degree required.

    Preferred Skills and Qualifications:

  • MBA or graduate degree strongly preferred
  • Strong domain experience in the Internet industry would be a definite plus.
