CDMA Blackberry with EV-DO hits Verizon on 9/17 as the 8703e

blackberry-8703e.jpgWe’ve been waiting for a decent Blackberry to hit the Verizon Wireless network and the wait appears over. The 8703e has EV-DO and Bluetooth, which pair up nicely with the QWERTY keyboard. The new handset hits the shelves first thing next week, on September 17th. With a two-year contract, Verizon will offer this new Blackberry for $349.99.

As far as the tethering question, well; since you rarely hear Verizon say this, I’ll let them answer it, via their press release: "Verizon Wireless customers can use their BlackBerry 8703e handset as a modem and get BroadbandAccess on Verizon Wireless’ award-winning Evolution-Data Optimized (EV-DO) network. A simple cable connection from the BlackBerry 8703e to a laptop and a subscription to BroadbandAccess Connect gives customers the option of using Verizon Wireless’ wireless broadband service to download data. Yeah, they don’t really make it clear that basic phone service will cost you $40, Blackberry data is something like $30-$40, AND THEN tethered modem data will run you another $15. TMobile is only EDGE, but $20 on top of voice gets you Blackberry service and tethered data. I think Verizon caters to the business crowd who have larger budgets than bloggers such as myself. ;)

Agree that the device is nice, but I was waiting for someone to put two and two together on the tethering access. I’ll spill the beans now: it will cost you $15 a month to use the phone as a modem if you have a qualifying plan; more if you don’t. Yikes!

Nice device. My corporate rep has been mentioning this one to me for awhile.

Still strikes me as odd that they don’t put Bluetooth DUN into the unit. It’s not like they don’t want you to use it with your since they offer the cable option.

Odd.
