India.gov.in – A Poorly Designed Website

Well, that’s what a report on website optimization concludes. The Indian governments website India.gov.in has fared miserably in tests measuring speed, typographic errors, accessibility and HTML validity. On the other hand, one may argue that sites of only five goverments were tested, so the study doesn’t have much scope for comparison. Not that there was a clear winner among Australia, US, UK, Canada and India:

All five sites failed our size and download time guidelines, all had typographic errors, all failed our accessibility tests and WCAG Level 3…only one site, Canada, passed the W3C’s (X)HTML validator…The US had the fastest and smallest site with Canada and the UK the largest and slowest sites. Australia had the best accessibility score with India the worst including the most HTML errors…There was no clear winner among these sites, all need some attention to boost credibility.

I don’t think the site looks too bad, especially when compared to other GOI websites: most of them have major design, navigation and usability flaws, apart from the problems mentioned above.
