You’re reading it here first: Web18 has launched a new tech site called Tech 2.0 which, though live, still seems to be in beta. The design is similar to that of CricketNext, and snazzier than older TV18 portals, so there could be an UrbanEye watching over this. The only connection to the TV18 network on display right now is a strip across the top that lists other portals owned by the group. There is no copyright notice on the site, and no ‘About’ or ‘Contact’ pages.
Tech 2.0 seems to be a natural extension of Moneycontrol.com Tech Blog, from where the reviews seem to have been ported. Commenting has been enabled, and I think a tech community could be in the offing. There are videos ported from CNBC-TV18 and lots of gizmos have been reviewed and listed. So, what should we expect? The tech portal could integrate with Web18’s CompareIndia.com (it’s up and running again) for comparing prices, and then sell PC’s, Mobile phones, Gaming Consoles, Cameras and Printers, among other things. It could link to Awaaz’ home shopping network, as well as tech shows on CNN-IBN and CNBC-TV18.
We’d told you about CricketNext‘s going live earlier today, and I’m wondering – What next? With their cross-media holdings, theTV18 group could launch a site a month and promote it on their channels.
Is Web18’s portfolio is growing too fast for its own good? The TV18 group had 6 internet properties when Yatra was launched. Also, more plugging of online portals on TV augurs well for ecommerce in India; as people become familiar with specific portals and relate them to companies they are familiar with (in this case TV18), they’ll feel more comfortable spending money online. What say you?
Update: The Moneycontrol.com Tech Blog redirects to Tech 2.0
