– ThisIsMoney has a speculative piece, citing sources, that BBC Worldwide, the commercial arm of BBC, may be looking to buy some social networking service…it has about $650 million of borrowings to spend on takeovers. But a major bid in the commercial arena would risk criticism that it was losing sight of its public service remit, as the story says. Under CEO John Smith, BBC Worldwide’s brief is to use its profits to provide extra income to supplement the license fee through, for instance, the sale of programs abroad.
— Meanwhile, Telegraph reports that BT is launching its own social networking service this week that will allow its broadband customers to upload content, such as audio and video footage online.
