July Systems Gets Mobile DRM Patent

A U.S. Patent, “Application Rights Management in a Mobile Environment” (US Patent 7089594), has been granted to July Systems, a Bangalore based mobile content-retailing systems provider. Their technology allows mobile content providers to update prices,-  change promotional schemes and purchasing options in real-time, without actually rewriting the application. Promotional options include try-before-you-buy, subscription, rental, pay-per-use, and advertising-sponsored purchases, as well as community-building features such as gifting and referrals. [Press Release]
I’m not sure about how often content providers will want to change their offers in real-time; it wont really inspire consumer confidence if the offer changes while you’re considering it, or just after you’ve bought something. But, to be fair, it does offer the retailer some flexibility. The try-before-you-buy feature sounds interesting, and I guess mobile content will have to become easier to access, choose, try and buy for that space to really develop.
