Deborah Tonroe, head of TV and Video with Orange UK, has given an interview about the revamped service, the new price packages and so on. Also, about the benefits of 3G TV over broadcast varieties. I found this paragraph interesting:
“Also, another problem with DAB is the limitation on the number of channels that you can watch, up to six I think. I think customers are going to be more demanding about the variety of channels. The six channels you want to watch may be different to the six that I want to watch, for example. So those are the two core reasons we didn’t feel it was right to go down the DAB road.”
It’s true that video/TV streaming over 3G can offer an effectively unlimited number of channels, but not many people can watch them in the same place at the same time. Whereas broadcast technologies offer a limited number of channels (even 20-40 is relatively limited) but everyone can watch them at once. Interesting conundrum. The broadcast channels will probably end up with the mainstream viewers whereas 3G offerings can offer niche plays.
