India’s premier industry body Confederation of Indian Industry – which usually lobbies for big industries like cement, steel and telecom – is getting serious about digital rights management. CII and a law firm LawQuest is bringing out a whitepaper which seeks to bring clarity on the question of digital rights management practice. The paper titled, Copyright and Emerging Technologies will be released on September 13 at a half-a-day legal workshop in Mumbai.
The CII-LawQuest paper will examine the legalities of copyright owner’s digital rights and recommend the introduction of digital rights management with reference to international laws. It will also cover the content for mobile phones. “Soon the mobile entertainment space may get larger than the existing copyright in the entertainment space. It is important at this stage to identify digital rights and create a legal framework, ensuring that the revenues are mapped and distributed properly,” said Bobby Bedi, Chairman of the CII National Entertainment Committee.
“It is very important that everyone in the value chain of the mobile value added service business gets their basics clear on copyright and contracts and arm themselves to save from legal battles. That’s the basic objective of this workshop,” said Vishal Gondal, chairman of the CII Mobile VAS Task Force and CEO, Indiagames.
In addition to releasing the white paper, the workshop will include presentation on documentation and contracts and a panel discussion on digital right management issues. The speakers at the workshop include Tata Teleservices VP (VAS) Pankaj Sethi, Star senior VP – interactive services Viren Popli, Hutchison Essar VP (VAS) SP Narayanan, UTV VP international Ashoka Holla, Reliance Infocomm- Head Content Alliances Sanjay Tandon, Raj Tilak among others. Film Producer, Ramesh Sippy would be giving the keynote address at this workshop.
