Forget iTunes movies; Sprint offering PPV on mobiles

Sprint_logoLooks like Sprint didn’t want to wait for the "It’s Showtime" Apple event next week as they announced the availability of full-length PPV movies on their mobile phones. Unlike Apple, who expects to have a limited run of movies mainly from studios that Disney has interest in, Sprint partnered with Buena Vista VOD, Lionsgate, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment and Universal Pictures. The PPV model will cost consumers between $3.99 and $5.99 for a viewing window of 24 hours to a full week, depending on the title. Mobility Site has the full press release will all of the details, including a listing of available films.

I enjoy watching occasional programming on my XV6700 via Slingbox Mobile, but I’m not sure about a full length movie; even if I break it into chunks. With adequate TV outs on a mobile, there might be opportunity to view the films on a bigger screen, but the resolution would have to be worth it. Thoughts?

This is nothing more than a novelty. I doubt it will make them any money. Between small screen, battery life, and connectivity issues it’s DOA.
