Vodafone UK apparently thinks mobile TV provided via 3G networks is in a better position to succeed than mobile TV via broadcast networks, such as Virgin Mobile’s planned DAB-IP service.
“If we couldn’t provide 3G streaming then I’d probably do the same thing,” says Alan Harper, strategy director with Vodafone Group. “But we think we’re in a better position with the current 3G mobile technologies, and if we want to go to full broadcast then MBMS [cellular broadcast] gives [us] the best option.”
I think that tune will change quickly if broadcast mobile TV is reasonably successful, but it could also be a ploy to justify not having a broadcast service until DVB-H is ready in the UK.
