This is an interesting discussion pointing out how much things have changed in the past year or so. “A year ago, most people argued that consumers wouldn’t tolerate ads on cell phones, and now it is becoming clear that mobile content won’t be able to survive without advertising.” The industry saw that people were prepared to pay for things on mobile phones, which is great — but it overestimated how much people were prepared to pay, especially on an ongoing basis. For example, charging people for each individual channel rather than an overall video service.
I also think the industry underestimated how much mobile content would cost… mobisodes are small and short, and they’re cheaper than filming a TV series but a few comments have made me think that some companies thought they’d be cheaper than they actually are. And the cost of making a mobile game is steadily increasing.
So, the answer seems to be advertising…just like in any other medium…
