After live (but premium) webcasts of Wimbledon earlier this summer, how can U.S. Open be left behind? It is a smaller step, though important because it is ad-supported: The USTA will be webcasting this evening’s session live on USopen.org, the first time an Open match will be seen on a medium other than one of the group’s broadcast partners.
This will only be in U.S…no plans after today, but this is a dipping-their-toes move from USTA.
Staci adds: Worth noting that this feed is on the rights owner’s site and not one operated by NBC Universal, which has the cable rights on USA Network, or by CBS, which has the broadcast rights. The streaming feed is high-quality but running more than a few seconds behind the broadcast. The feed, available in Real or Windows Media Player, is otherwise identical to tv, including the ads. The stunt also calls attention to the event’s other multimedia including apps from IBM — a Flash-based desktop widget for live stats and 3D PointTracker module, streaming radio, podcasts, video archives (the “classic matches” page has a note up now saying they can’t be shown now due to contractual obligations with broadcast partners), highlights, etc.
