Online Travel Industry To Become $2-Billion Business By ’08: Sandeep Murthy

Guys, if you are launching another travel portal and are looking for some numbers to don those presentation slides, here are a few numbers, thanks to this Economic Times article. –  The online travel industry is growing at 125 per cent (CAGR) annually, and they are generating revenues of around $300-$500 million currently, the report says quoting some industry people.
I wonder if the travel portals are generating that kind of revenues. This could be mainly the direct sales on Air Deccan/Spice Jet/Jet Airways websites. (It would be interesting to know how much travel sites contribute to this $300 million-plus number.) The report says online ticketing is 2 per cent of the entire travel industry’s – said to be “anywhere between $20 billion and $50 billion”.
Sandeep Murthy, CEO of Cleartrip.com, is being quoted here as saying, “Growing at the current rate, the online travel industry in India may become a $2 billion industry by 2008. In this highly competitive industry only those travel portals that will address travellers needs rightly will sustain.”
