CSTV Launches 100 Broadband Channels

Updated below: CSTV, the U.S. college sports network now owned by CBS, has gone ballistic: others media companies are launching 2, 3 or 5 broadband channels…how much have they launched? 100. Yes. Of course, each is probably dedicated to one college, so makes sense (here’s a video overview about the service). The service is called CSTV XXL (and yes, it does not work in Firefox, a big mistake).
These broadband channels be offering a total of about 10,000 live events, including audio, video and live data feeds of press conferences, news, features, archived games, plus ticketing, e-commerce and more. All of these are ad-supported.
The service is powered jointly by two of our sponsors, thePlatform and Maven Networks.
AP: This story has some pricing info…not everything is ad driven: Notre Dame games will be free, while Navy, Stanford and other schools will charge $4.95 to $9.95 a month each for an “All-Access” broadband channel. CSTV will also sell access to the entire package of 100 schools for $14.95 a month or $99.95 a year.
Because of existing TV contracts, however, live video of football and basketball games will initially be limited. CSTV and the schools will generally share revenues from subscriptions, advertising, merchandise and other sales.
