I just read this article in Time Magazine, not just about vending machines selling mobile content but actual phones…Vodafone is gearing up to sell prepaid mobile phones via vending machines in the UK. That’s fine, but what happens the age of the user has to be verified? Or even the identity needs to be nailed down? There’s ways around this of course — the handsets sold can have any internet access disabled until it is activated after an age verification system…but it’s going to be difficult to avoid people getting their hands on phones anonymously. And what with all the hype over terrorism and other mobile nasties that could cause quite a problem.
