Nortel India MD Says WiMax Will Catch On; ISPAI Wants Differential Pricing From TRAI

Nortel India MD Ravi Chauhan says in an interview with The Economic Times, that he expects Wimax to catch on over the next 24-36 months. This is because there are no zoning restrictions in India (yet) and you can have multiple customers across income segments in a single area. It becomes cost effective. “Wimax or 4G telephony is the next big thing that is going to happen”, he says.
He expects a convergence of voice and data, and adds that Microsoft and Nortel are collaboring to create a multi-media communication system for both PC’s and Laptops. Because hardware is being commoditiesed, services and solutions to pick up.
Update:
The Internet Service Providers Association of India has submitted a report to TRAI, suggesting different pricing points for various frequencies from 1.8 GHz to 24.5 Ghz, and asking for tariff to be based on per capita income of a city. The ISPAI wants WiMax to be standardised, and is open to setting up a mesh based network connecting various modes, including WiFi and WiMax
