(reg required) The facts of the case: Users in Japan have been signing up to DoCoMo’s 1seg mobile terrestrial digital TV services, taking home the heavily-subsidized handsets and then cancelling the contract. This gives them a free portable TV…with a one-to-many service the telco can’t stop access to a particular customer from the broadcast end. The verdict? I can’t believe DoCoMo was so stupid as to not program the handsets to lock down the TV service when the contract was cancelled, as KDDI and Softbank did.
