AOL Video Adds Movie Downloads; Sony Now, Three Others To Follow

AOL becomes the fourth major online movie store in U.S., after Movielink, CinemaNow and Guba: AOL Video is on its way to a full-service video download destination with the addition of movie downloads for prices from $9.99 to $19.99. Post-download, movies can be watched offline on other PCs and Windows Media portable devices…this is not much different from what other stores are able to offer, in terms of rights, and generally speaking, none of the distribution efforts like AOL Video and others will have much variation in usage rights.
Titles from Sony are up today; deals also have been made with 20th Century Fox, Universal Pictures, and Warner Bros.
The deals with Fox and Sony include TV content. Sony shows “Charlie’s Angels,” “Starsky & Hutch,” (insert joke here) and “SWAT” are being streamed ad-free now. Fox paid downloads are en route; series include “24,” increasingly ubiquitous “Prison Break,” and the all-important “Buffy the Vampire Slayer.”
Prior to this AOL had a promotional tie up with Movielink, since early 2004.
More details in the release here.
Update: So far, there are a dozen Sony movies in the AOL Video Movies on Demand with Spidey 2 getting the biggest promotion; titles are priced at $9.99, $14.99 and $19.99.
