UK online publisher Magicalia has picked up specialty magazine publisher Encanta Media for $5.1 million, aiming to style itself as the UK’s first special-interest publisher with integrated online and print communities. Magicalia operates 40-plus websites, and will initially concentrate on building web communities around Encanta’s nine specialist interest magazines in woodworking, gardening, patchwork and so on.
Encanta chairman Peter Harkness will become executive chairman of Magicalia. Managing Director Owen Davies wil be Magicalia MD alongside Jeremy Tapp and Adam Laird.
Encanta was part of Highbury House, the magazine publisher that ended up in administration in January in debt to the tune of $76 million. Yorkshire-based buyout fund Endless rescued it for an undisclosed amount and then sold to Magicalia. Encanta recorded a turnover of around $11.3 million before Highbury went into administration.
Laird said in the release: “The broader Encanta team bring well-proven magazine skills so together we can confidently launch and acquire more print titles for the group.” So expect more of these.
