Indiantelevision.com carries a report on the third annual Entertainment, Media and Marketing forum in Mumbai today. During the session on digital entertainment,
Indiantelevision.com CEO Anil Wanvari spoke about global trends in digital entertainment – in gaming, VOD, music retailing, and IPTV – and quoted an Instat research that estimates 413 million houses using broadband by 2010, of which 130 million will be accessing video content. About consumption of online videos in India, he estimated a revenue of at least Rs. 125-150 crore by 2008. “It is probably this that has prompted Eros to partner with MovieFlix.com,” he said.
Tata Sky MD Vikram Kaushik pointed deficiencies in the current cable services, and highlighted the benefits DTH. He also added that film producers can provide movies on pay-per-view within a few days of the theatrical release to help curb piracy.
Microsoft India gaming head Mohit Anand emphasised that globally, gaming is bigger business than movies. Microsoft is eyeing India’s large population that is under 18. He also mentioned that now movies are being based on games (Resident Evil), and in future, movies could be made to make them more game friendly. In India, he said, games are being used to market the movies, while the real potential is in developing high quality games over time, and shooting sequences for the game while shooting the film.
So Gaming is going to grow. Broadband and DTH will create more options for digital content delivery. Everyone seems to be talking about content delivery and the market potential, but not many seem to be talking about actual content creation.
