mTLD has announced its plans for trademarks containing common words…the domains will be set aside and trademark owners will need to show their brand connection to the words to have the domain removed from the list and registered with them — companies will need to have registered their marks before 11 July 2004 or have used them for five years “in good faith”.
“From 13 October, Joe Public will get access to buy the premium names. The top-notch domains will be sold in batches either via a tender process or at auction and distributed in batches during 2008.”
TechDirt points out the PDF containing the list of the words is 149 pages long, which could be considered excessive. Although the list does include names in different languages. Another point is that a lot of the names are excessively long…eg abuscadotrabalho.mobi.
