Bigger IT Companies See Opportunity In Animation And Game Development

I guess this is becoming a trend. Bigger IT companies are moving into animation and game development. Satyam’s Nipuna already has such services and it was in parleys with global entertainment companies like Walt Disney. Now I hear Rolta, an Indian mid-sized IT company, is getting into animation and game development (according to a report in Animation xpress). Rolta, which is strong in areas like GIS and design automation services, has set up a division called ‘Rolta GDC’. It will be headed by Sachin Naik who was formerly business head at Milestone Interactive.
Apparently more and more IT companies will look at game development and animation as the next growth area. Small wonder why. A Business Standard report has some numbers on the industry: The animation industry in India is currently valued at Rs 13 billion. By 2009, at a CAGR of 35 per cent, it is expected to move up to Rs 43 billion.
The gaming industry stands at Rs 360 million, but is expected to grow at 78 per cent and be worth Rs 13,500 million by 2009.
