CIOL: Tamil is taking a lead in local language applications for mobile. An expert committee of computer scientists will submit a proposal to the Tamil Nadu government for standardisation of Tamil language for mobile phones. About 50 per cent of mobile phone users in Tamil Nadu cannot use the English-based applications such as SMS, or other value-added services. V Sankaranarayanan, director of Tamil Virtual University, a votary of localization, said: “Mobile phone usage will go up once applications such as SMS can be made in Tamil. But before these computing solutions, the coding and localization efforts should be standardized.”
It’s essential to standardize the format being used so that any mobile phone would support the same SMS or related applications globally.
