MauiGames Studio has announced Hawaii Golf Classics, a game that is 100% advertising supported. The press release claims this is the first fully ad-supported mobile game on the market — I’m not sure if that’s true, I know there is a lot of plans for ad-supported mobile games so it isn’t the first by much. What’s more, the game is currently available for PCs and won’t be available on mobile phones until later this summer.
However, one interesting aspect of this deal is that it’s not a random advertiser seeking a particular audience. The game uses the actual layouts of a series of famous PGA and Champions Tour golf course, with the first one being Kaanapali Golf Courses’ Tournament North Course on Maui. Sure enough, the sponsor for the game is Kaanapali Golf Courses. “Players will be able to experience the thrill of Kaanapali whenever they have their cell phone in hand. It’s the next best thing to being here,” said Ed Kageyama, the general manager of Kaanapali Golf Courses.
The system uses AdCell Media Mobile Ad-Insertion Technology, Release 3.0, which inserts ads into cellphone content and tracks the results. New ads are delivered as people play the game, and advertisers are only billed for guaranteed impressions.
