UK spectrum regulator Ofcom has said that it will be releasing spectrum for 4G networks (whatever they will be) “using the market mechanism”. Since Ofcom doesn’t know what 4G will entail exactly, and since the 3G spectrum auctions caused a lot of problems, Ofcom will let companies bid for spectrum and then “sort it out with end users by making offerings and seeing what works”. The difference between wireless (WiFi) broadband and mobile broadband is fast disappearing anyway. It would also probably help companies offer smart services that connected to one technology at home or work and another technology on the road.
There has apparently been some pressure from operators to set aside spectrum especially for them to guarantee extensions to 3G, to Ofcom replied: “It could be in their commercial interest to discourage new technologies unless they themselves are able to participate in them.” How true…
I’m not sure whether this will help mobile broadcast TV in the UK or not. Ofcom is also looking at spectrum trading.
