Yatra.com Advertises On Sister Channels

The war among travel portals in India is getting interesting: Yatra.com has a clear advantage over other portals because of the preferential treatment it can receive from its sister concerns from the TV18 group. All evening today, including during prime time, CNN-IBN carried Yatra promos that urge viewers to plan a trip for the four day Independance Day extended weekend (if one bunks work on the 14th). Simultaneously, another TV18 property – moneycontrol.com – carries a flash promo that slowly fills up with vacation possibilities, and suggests that more are available at Yatra.com. Boring. Is Yatra paying for this or is this a Rakhi gift from its sister sites? :P
Makemytrip.com clearly holds the advantage with a series of amusing advertisements and some excellent award-winning viral marketing by Webchutney. They became the most visible Indian travel portal with a fairly aggressive burst and have claimed top spot in the consumers mind. A breather from them has allowed TravelGuru first, and Yatra now to make themselves heard, but I’m sure another burst Makemytrip must be in the works. But can they compete with the TV18 group backing Yatra?
