Discovery Launches D2C Mobile Site In US

Discovery Communications has announced its biggest mobile content push in U.S. yet: the launch of its direct-to-consumer website in the US, which will offer wallpapers, ringtones, podcasts and “other special features” direct to mobile phones…the URL is discoverymobile.com.
The content will content from Shark Week, Miami Ink and The Crocodile Hunter, as well as over two dozen animal sounds and nature scenes — for $1.99. There’ll also be text news reports on science, nature, health, travel, planet earth and current affairs, fan sites where consumers can view exclusive video clips, learn more about on-air personalities and access program schedules, and short-form spotlights of shows from Discovery’s entire family of U.S. networks offering program descriptions and scheduling information.
Also, later this year, it plans to launch its video channel through various U.S. operators.
Discoverymobile went live in Europe back in February, and is now available in nine countries. As a nice change for new mobile sites and services the US version is on time — it was mooted for the third quarter of this year.
Rafat adds: Looks like it is working through Bango and Volantis on this…but what’s the deal on this long URL? They should have figured out a shorter one. (And the site is not working for me on Nokia N90-T-Mobile-Opera Mini combo).
