Google has given up, or rather, wised up: after some obvious plans to get into online music downloads/service, it has publicly said that it is not working on anything like that, reports Billboard. It used a keynote slot at the annual NARM (National Association of Recording Merchandisers) conference to quash rumors of a so-called “Gtunes” store — much to the delight of retailers attending the confab.
As the story rightly surmises, in the wake of a cool reception to Google video sales (and other newer services from Google), and in the face of a challenging environment for DRM and device compatibility (and of course the futility of fighting against Apple), it has put its plans on the backburner.
Chris Sacca, head of biz dev for Google, said that the big opportunity in digital music is in developing the ecosystem: one that allows consumers to move content from the home to the car and between devices with ease. Sacca didn’t say how, if at all, Google plans to play a role in this.
