France Moves Forward in Mobile TV Legislation

France is moving, seemingly quite slowly, towards broadcast mobile TV, with the French Council of Ministers approving the draft bill on the modernisation of audiovisual broadcasting and the television of tomorrow. This is described as “a necessary first step toward the emergence of mobile television in France”.
Bouygues Telecom is keen to get the whole thing sorted out quickly so a broadcast mobile TV service can by launched by September 7 2007, when France hosts the Rugby World Cup games. “This would create an excellent opportunity to move out of the stone age of costly, elitist mobile television services and into the golden age of personal mobile broadcast television affordable for all”. That rhetoric is a little strong perhaps, but at least they’ve staked a position.
