Yahoo Invests In Indian Matrimonial & Classifieds Firm BharatMatrimony

This is Yahoo’s first strategic investment in the Indian sub-continent (its Yahoo India portal is doing OK): Yahoo has teamed up with VC firm Canaan Partners to invest $8.6 million in BharatMatrimony group. This is the first investment by both Yahoo and Canaan locally…Canaan was the lead investor in this $8.6 million first round financing.
Canaan was the first investor in Match.com in U.S. in 1995. Yahoo top bosses was in the country a couple of months ago when they talked about making a potential acquisition in India. (Was this deal Yahoo talked about then?)
Bharat Matrimony was founded in 1997 and until now was self-funded. More than 500,000 marriages have been arranged online in that time, said the company. The company manages more than a dozen different matrimony portals catering to Indians of different languages and religions. The other sites the group owns are Clickjobs.com, Indiaproperty.com and Indiaautomobile.com….more details on our sister site ContentSutra.
