The Financial Express reports that MTNL plans to tie up with Star TV, Prasar Bharati, SET and others, for delivering television content via its TriBand Broadband service. IPTV is currently undergoing trial runs in pockets of Delhi and Mumbai. A senior TRAI official said that commercial launch will be possible after the Cable TV Act is amended to bring IPTV under its purview. MTNL has tied up with Time Broadband Services Ltd for content delivery and maintenance.
Bharti is also conducting its IPTV trials close by, in Gurgaon. They’ve tied up with UTStarcom for content delivery. Star TV has confirmed that they’re providing test signals to both MTNL and Bharti.
MTNL currently offers only one plan with unlimited bandwidth, essential for IPTV and Triple Play – the TriB Unlimited at Rs.1399 in Delhi – which it launched earlier this year as a precursor to IPTV. MTNL has confirmed that it has extended registrations for the same by two months, till September 30th. A launch of a similar plan in Mumbai is expected later this month, probably on Independance Day.
Bharti also offers the unlimited bandwidth plan, though the rate varies from city to city. With IPTV on the horizon, expect more sops from both MTNL and Bharti, and perhaps a lowering of rates as both will now look to increase subscriber base.
