Music retailer HMV is starting a trial to sell mobile phones and contracts from Vodafone and Orange in its stores. It’s starting with high-end music phones — the Samsung D600, Sony Ericsson W890i and the Nokia N91 — and plans to add prepaid later.
The aim is to differentiate its HMV Digital music download service from other retailers, and it will sell songs from in-store booths as well as online. Which is good news for people wanting to avoid download charges. I don’t know whether HMV has any special software on the phones it sells, but that’s really where it wants to head.
