Singaporean mobile game publisher Ozura Mobile has announced plans for an “epic action adventure” which stars Lava Kroft, “a new age woman who has an exceptional thirst for discovering some of the most intriguing and mystical treasures in the world”. Naturally, Eidos — the publisher of Tomb Raider and creator of its star, Lara Croft — is very interested in the proposal. It is deciding whether to take legal action based on whether or not Ozura is breaching its copyright. It’s clear Ozura is playing off the success of Lara Croft, the question is whether it has changed enough to avoid infringing Eidos’ intellectual property rights. I think Eidos would have more luck going after trademark infringement, except that would like require it to have trademarked “Lara Croft” in all the countries it wishes to challenge Ozura in.
