Microsoft Is Game For A Pre-Diwali Xbox 360 Launch; Reddington Has Exclusive Distribution Rights

Microsoft’s Xbox 360 looks set for a festive pre-Diwali launch, almost a full year after its November 2005 global launch. Chennai based Redington (India) Limited has exclusive rights for distributing the Xbox. According to IANS reports, Redington plans to set up 15 flagship stores in seven cities – Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai, Kolkata, Pune, Bangalore and Hyderabad. They will also be tying up with exclusive retail stores and seting up Microsoft-only gaming lounges.
An SMS short code service deal with Yahoo! India (X360 to 8243) allows pre-ordering; as promotion, there is a tie-up with Adidas, and prizes for spreading the word via the Xbox India homepage. The Xbox 360 Core system with a free game is priced at an ERP of Rs. 19,990, and the Xbox 360 System at Rs. 23,990.
I think the Xbox launch comes a little too late – a lag between global and Indian launches only helps the gray market and resellers at eBay.in, or gives gaming enthusiasts further incentive to bypass the duty costs and purchase it overseas; that’s business that Microsoft India has lost.
