Now it’s pure-play ISPs versus telco-ISPs. Here is a podcast with David Appasamy, Chief Communications Officer at Sify Ltd, the ISP-cum-the broadband portal-cum-the cybercafe chain. The issue they primarily discussed was about the recent controversial ban of blogs in India.
David pointed out that the domains like Blogspot and Typepad became inaccessible in India because the big telco-ISPs (the companies like Bharti and Reliance who also provide internet access besides phone services) couldn’t block the sub-domains (of the 17 blogs which the governent had asked them to block in its order) as they did not have the technical capability for it. So they went ahead and blocked the entire domain, inviting the wrath of the entire blogging community (and also the government).
An interesting point. I use Reliance Broadband, and I did not have access to the said blogs during the ban period. Obviously Reliance couldn’t block the subdomains.
