Motorola, Softbank Launch WiMAX Trial

Softbank (which recently bought Vodafone) and Motorola are reportedly teaming up to trial WiMax in Japan. “The trial is expected to last five months and focus on performance of WiMAX in the 2.5 GHz spectrum. Specifically, the trial will test throughput and range, as well as the speed of network handovers between access points, according to Motorola and Softbank.”
Softbank is the number mobile 3 player in Japan and keen to gain marketshare so it is looking at ways to differentiate itself. That said, I don’t know enough about wi-fi specs to know whether this is true WiMax or another wi-fi technology being called WiMax. Either way, the intention is to put wireless connections in mobile phones.
