AOL Appoints Chief Technical Evangelist For Wireless

AOL has hired Michael Wehrs (formerly director of Business and Industry Development at Microsoft) into the new position of Chief Technical Evangelist for wireless group. “He will serve as technical visionary, industry spokesperson and standards and public representative for AOL’s wireless platform and embedded products. In addition, he will be responsible for building on and executing engagement strategies with external partners, industry and government bodies.”
AOL is doing a fair bit in the mobile space, including all the general stuff such as a mobile browser, porting its instant messenger (AIM) program and location and information services such as Mapquest, CityGuide and MovieFone (this was in April). In fact, Telephia said that AIM was the second most common instant messenger program on mobile phones in the US. On top of all this was a rumored MVNO in Germany.
