Live from Carnegie Hall? Sure. Live from Joe’s Pub? Why not? With high-profile compnies like NetworkLive and LiveNation developing live concerts for digital media distribution, bars and clubs across LA that offer live music entertainment are now recording the shows and broadcasting them online, reports Billboard, giving emerging artists access to more exposure than the live audience itself. For the acts, it’s exposure that rivals any multi city tour, and links to their performances can be then forwarded to friends, fans and promoters.
The concert business is taking advantage of cheap broadband to tap into broadcasting live performances as a new source of revenue. Consumers are looking for quality, exclusive multimedia content, and live performances fit this bill perfectly. AOL’s delivery of the Live 8 concerts last summer made it clear that both consumer demand and the potential to offer compelling product exist. It is also changing the dynamics among artist, label, venue and digital music services. Once recorded, promoters are discovering that the broadcast could be sent to a variety of outlets, including TV, mobile phone carriers, terrestrial and satellite radio, online and other digital music distribution avenues, offering access to 3G, SDTV, HDTV, and live ringtones.
Promoters are making the investment. LiveNation, a venue operator with 40-plus amphitheaters, plans to wire 120 venues and festival sites (it currently has 36). It broadcast more than 350 concerts from around the world last year. Clubs are wiring their stages and offering the performances on their own Web sites. The investment could be recouped by advertising. For AOL-NetworkLive, live music attracts advertisers such as Intel, Nissan, Chevy, Lexus and Absolut.
