India’s Hinterland Story

Business week has a story on how Indian telcos are pushing towards the hinterland for the next stage of growth. I found this statistic interesting. Which is the highest sold handset in India? It’s Nokia 1100 costing about $44, which accounts for 15 per cent of the handsets sold in India. Nokia, with its 45-odd models, commands a 63 per cent market share in Indian handset market. As we are more or less reaching a saturation in urban markets, others are also launching low cost handsets. Motorola, which has 8.5 per cent marketshare, is launching its $30 handset in October. LG, which has 13%, and Samsung 3.5%, have to follow suit.
